Phoenix is the 'hub' or center of what residents of Phoenix call 'the Valley' (short for the Phoenix Valley). The Valley is the entire Phoenix Metropolitan area or the 'Greater Phoenix' area. This is broken down into regions. These are typically referred to as the West Valley, the North West Valley, the South West Valley, Downtown, North Phoenix, the North East Phoenix, the South East Valley, and the East Valley.

The city's estimated population is over 1.5 million people and the total population of the entire Greater Phoenix area is over 4 million.
